Computer specifications to send

For a Mac, use Apple menu → About This Mac. For Windows, Settings → System → About shows key system details; storage information is under System → Storage. Include what you can find rather than opening the computer or guessing.

  • Manufacturer, exact model, and approximate model year if known
  • Processor or Apple chip, RAM, and SSD or hard-drive capacity
  • Graphics card for gaming laptops, desktops, or separate components
  • Battery performance, charger availability, and any hardware problems

Working condition and missing parts

Tell us if the laptop boots, the display works, and the keyboard, trackpad, ports, and Wi-Fi function. Describe overheating, liquid damage, battery swelling, or missing keys. For desktop towers and components, list the parts included and whether they have been tested.

Do not ship or bring a computer with a swollen battery without first asking for safe handling instructions. A nonworking computer requires an individual review and may not receive an offer.

Protect your files before a computer sale

Back up documents, photos, password vaults, and any licensed software you need. Sign out of personal accounts and use the manufacturer’s supported erase or reset process before handing over the device. Deleting individual files is not equivalent to securely erasing storage.

For Macs, follow Apple’s transfer instructions for your specific model and macOS version, including Find My and Activation Lock where supported. Company-owned computers must be released by the owner or administrator; do not transfer them with workplace access or sensitive data still present.
